When I ask parents what their plan is if their child begins to choke or becomes unresponsive, one of the most common answers I receive is “I will dial 9-1-1”. My response to that is to then ask what they will do in the several minutes it takes first responders to arrive on scene? This is the point where reality usually sets in. The harsh reality is that a lot of parents would be rendered helpless in a situation where their child’s life is on the line.
Parents play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of their children. Among the essential skills that parents should possess are knowledge of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and choking interventions. In emergencies, being equipped with these skills can be the difference between life and death.
The seconds and minutes that are most vital to a child’s survival in the case of cardiac arrest or a choking emergency will pass before first responders even arrive on scene.
The survivability of a child in cardiac arrest decreases by 10% for every minute that CPR is not being performed following the arrest. This could result in the child becoming no longer viable in the time that it takes first responders to arrive.
A choking child will likely become unresponsive after about a minute if the object is not removed from their obstructed airway. After approximately four minutes of their brain not receiving any oxygen, permanent damage can occur. After ten minutes of their vital organs not receiving any oxygen, the chances of revival without permanent deficits are extremely low.
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation):
- CPR is a life-saving technique used in emergencies to manually circulate blood and provide ventilation to a person suffering from cardiac arrest.
- Parents who are trained in CPR can respond quickly and effectively in critical situations, such as when a child becomes unresponsive and stops breathing normally.
- CPR training equips parents with the skills to perform chest compressions and rescue breaths, maintaining blood flow and oxygenation to vital organs until professional help arrives.
Choking Interventions:
- Choking is a common emergency, especially among children, who may accidentally inhale foreign objects or food.
- Parents trained in choking interventions can swiftly recognize the signs of choking and act quickly to dislodge the obstructing object.
- Immediate action is crucial in choking incidents to prevent asphyxiation and potential brain damage due to lack of oxygen.
Importance of Parental Training:
- Children are prone to accidents and medical emergencies, making it imperative for parents to be prepared to handle such situations.
- Quick and appropriate intervention by a parent trained in CPR and choking interventions can significantly increase the chances of a positive outcome.
- Training empowers parents to act confidently and decisively during emergencies, reducing panic and improving the overall response quality.
Accessibility of Training:
- 1st On Scene CPR is a group of trained and experienced first responders who provide private on-site CPR and life safety training courses.
- Simply gather a small group of parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends, or co-workers and contact 1st On Scene CPR to book a private course at your home or office on a day and time that is convenient for you!
In conclusion, the significance of parents knowing CPR and choking interventions cannot be overstated. These skills are invaluable in safeguarding the well-being of children and responding effectively to emergencies. By investing time in acquiring these essential skills, parents can be better prepared to handle unexpected situations and potentially save lives.
Remember, the safety and health of your child depend on your readiness to act swiftly and effectively in times of crisis.
